Setting yourself up for success

As always, decluttering is the first and most important step in any organizing project. There’s no sense in shuffling around things you don’t need anymore!

Take everything (yes, we mean everything) out of the garage and sort into categories. Decide what you really need to keep, and what can be tossed, recycled, or donated.

Also, make sure to measure your space before purchasing anything!

Freestanding shelving

If you don’t want to install anything permanent, freestanding shelving is your best bet.

Hyper Tough 13.88"D x 30"W x 68.8"H 5-Shelf Plastic Garage Storage Shelves

This isn’t the sturdiest option out there, but it works just fine if you’re not storing anything super heavy and you’re on a budget. Each shelf holds up to 70 lbs.

Amazon Basics 4-Shelf Adjustable, Heavy Duty Storage Shelving Unit

This is a sturdier option (each shelf can hold 350 lbs) that is still pretty affordable. We use these a lot for our clients! You can get them with or without wheels.

Containers

Always make sure to label your containers! A label maker is the obvious choice, but painter’s tape or masking tape and a Sharpie work well too.

HDX 27 Gal. Storage Tote in Clear with Yellow Lid

These bins are super sturdy. Clear containers are a must for garages so you can see everything inside them at a glance! You can store anything from outdoor toys, to power tools, to gardening supplies in these.

DIY garage storage hacks

If your garage has exposed studs, you can screw in hooks and attach bungee cables to create easy storage for rakes, brooms, and shovels.

Free Plan For Tote Storage Rack

This is such a great idea for storing bins! Love the easy access this offers - no unstacking multiple other bins to get to the one you need. This definitely requires some handyperson skills, but doesn’t seem too difficult if you have the tools. We haven’t had the opportunity to try this one yet but will update if we do!
